The Wethersfield Parks & Recreation Department announces that registration for its fall programs begins Sept. 3rd. The Fall 2008 Brochure is available for download at this time. Registrants will have the availability to register online, by mail or in-person. The 7th Annual Winton Keane Bitner Soccer Jamboree will take place on September 6th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wethersfield High School's Cottone Field. This is a free tournament that honors the three Wethersfield residents lost in the 2001 World Trade Center collapse. Each year the new WHS boys' and girls' varsity teams are showcased and play surrounding town varsity teams. It will be broadcast live on Channel 14.
The Richard M. Keane Foundation is once again sponsoring a family picnic on Sunday, September 7th from 5 to 7 p.m. on Broad Street Green.
The United States Air Force Band of Liberty, which has performed in the past, will be soon deployed to Iraq. In their place this year, Prelude, "New England's Premier Party Band," will play for us as we enjoy an old fashioned picnic on the historic Town Green.
Everyone is asked to bring their own blanket or "fancy" tables and chairs and a picnic supper. There is no rain date.
Wethersfield's Richard M. Keane Foundation announces the opening of the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center in the east wing of the Pitkin Community Center. All are invited to the grand opening and dedication of the facility, to be held September 11, 2008 on the Community Center grounds, 30 Greenfield Street. There will be an open house from 1-6 p.m. and a formal dedication ceremony at 6:30 pm. In the event of rain, the dedication ceremony will be held inside the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center Gymnasium.
The Connecticut Department of Veteran Affairs is sponsoring "Stand Down 2008," a day long support services program for needy and homeless veterans on Friday, September 12, 2008 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the State Veteran's Home campus in Rocky Hill. Over thirty state, federal and private agencies are expected to be on hand to provide direct assistance and resources to individual veterans.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has completed a Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) that will become effective on September 26, 2008. These new FIRMs will replace FIRMS that were last adopted in 1978. If the new FIRM shows a structure in Zones A, AE, A1-30, AH, and AO, then the structure is within a high-risk zone known as Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs).
The Central Connecticut Health District received notification from the Connecticut Department of Public Health that mosquitoes recently trapped in Wethersfield tested positive for West Nile Virus. For the past several years, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station has been trapping and collecting mosquitoes for testing from approximately 90 trap sites around the state. Two of those sites are within the Central CT Health District, one in Newington and the other in Wethersfield.
Mayor Adil and the Wethersfield Town Council are in support of Governor Jodi Rell's initiative to urge Connecticut citizens and businesses to take part in the Governor's Care & Share Challenge regarding donations to Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare. These two organizations assist those who find themselves faced with hunger and are in need of help, including seniors, children and working individuals in the cities, suburbs and rural areas of Connecticut. This campaign will continue through September 26.
